Two friends originally from County Durham have beaten the Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive amount of time playing pool.

Marc Murray, 37, who lives in Blyth and Colin Pilcher, 40, from Consett, successfully broke the record after they played for 111 hours from July 25 to July 29 at Hooch’s Snooker and Pool Lounge in Consett.

They aimed to play about 1,000 continuous games, as they were only allowed breaks in short 20 minute increments.

Alongside their attempt, they aimed to raise a total of £10,000 for The National Deaf Children’s Society (NCDS) and the If You Care Share Foundation with the final total still being counted.

The pair had previously held the world record in 2011 and 2013 but were beaten in 2017 until this year they decided to pick up their pool cues again and now hold the world record.

Marc, speaking after he slept for a staggering 17 hours following the stint, told The Northern Echo the experience was a great success.

He said: “It went well but it was really tough. The night times were especially hard.

“We had a lot of people coming in and supporting us as well as our friends and family. We had karaoke on and competitions running whilst we played.

“Afterwards, we both managed to have a couple of pints when we finished. We are just pleased to be bringing back the record where it belongs.”

Marc and Colin still have a long wait until they can finally bring the certificate home, as they and all 35 of their witnesses will have to fill in a large amount of paperwork to help validate their record.

For now, they are planning to celebrate with friends and family with a party in the coming weeks whilst they wait for their official Guinness World Record to be confirmed.
