A County Durham pub has won the Campaign For Real Ale's 'Best in the North East' category.

The Grey Horse, in Consett, is the town's oldest pub, and had its only in-house microbrewery, Consett Ale Works. In its years of operation, it has earned accolades from the Durham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), including Town Pub of the Year, and has made it into the top 16 pubs in the UK.

Now, it has been given the title of CAMRA North East Region Pub of the Year, and will proceed to the Super Region round, competing for a spot in the top four pubs in Britain, and a chance to be named CAMRA's national pub of the year 2023.

The Golden Smog in Hambletonian Yard, in Stockton, finished in the runner-up position.

Both pubs have been tipped in the awards before, which place a heavy emphasis on real ale, community pubs, and consumer rights.

CAMRA supports "well-run pubs as the centres of community life" – whether in rural or urban areas – and believe their continued existence play a "critical social role in UK culture".

CAMRA also supports the pub as the one place in which to consume real ale (also known as cask-conditioned beer, or cask ale) and to try one of over 5,500 different styles now produced across the UK.
