A Redcar music group has made a plea for support in the face of disbanding without a new venue.

The Silverwood band had been based in the Nunthorpe Institute for the last 30 years.

Now that the school has become an academy the use of its facilities has been withdrawn.

They are now in a race against time to find a new venue or the group will be forced to split up.

Judith Daley said: "Music is a dying art, the funding for which has been cut over many years, it’s the community bands such as ours that give youngsters the opportunity to grow and local amateur musicians an outlet for their skills.

"We have until the end of August to find a new venue that we can rehearse in on a Thursday night.

"The band over the years has supported many local youngsters into a music career, most recently Charlotte Potter the classical cross-over singer from Guisborough that has had a lot of local press.

"We have raised money for numerous charities by performing, we were one of the initial bands that performed to raise funds to build Saltburn Bandstand and the Ann Charlton Lodge, when we were known as the Redcar Silverwood Band."

The size of the group is proving to be a problem during the search for a new home for the band.

Judith added: "We are self-funded, our outgoings are covered by members subs and the small fee we get for concerts, members are not paid we do it because we love making music and performing for people.

"Cutbacks in arts funding means that there is little opportunity for support through grants."
