Four people have been taken to hospital, two in a serious condition, after a crash on the A19 in Sunderland this afternoon (July 22). 

Emergency services were called to the A-road near to the A690 Durham Road following reports of a serious collision. 

Police, fire service, ambulance and the air ambulance were all in attendance at the scene, with the ambulance service confirming that four people have been taken to Newcastle RVI.

Two of the patients are in a serious condition.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 12:20 to reports of a serious road traffic incident on the A19.

"We sent five emergency ambulance crews, three Hazardous Area Response Vehicles, a doctor, a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic and the air ambulance and transported four patients to the RVI by road, two of which had serious injuries."

The Great North Air Ambulance also attended, but the patients were taken to hospital via road ambulance. 

A spokesperson for the air ambulance sad: "Our critical care team was activated at 12.25pm to reports of a road traffic collision near the Herrington Interchange on the A690 Durham Road.

"We had a paramedic and two doctors on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 12.45pm.

"Our team assessed and treated a patient who was then taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service road crew, accompanied by our team."

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service added: "I can confirm an incident on the A19, on the northbound carriageway. It's an RTC (road traffic collision).

"We received the call at 12.25pm. We have four fire engines there and an officer.

"We're still at the scene, we're still dealing with it."

Northumbria Police hyave confirmed their attendance but haven't put out an official statement on the collision yet.
