A sick pervert who downloaded almost 36,000 child abuse images and videos, including ones of babies being sexually assaulted, was caught red-handed when police raided his home.

George Jeffries was found asleep on is sofa when officers searched his home and discovered a laptop downloading vile sexually abuse images.

The 50-year-old's stash, which included some of the ‘worst possible images’, were hidden on a number of digital devices, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Uzma Khan, prosecuting, said police raided the defendant’s home following a tip-off and caught him in the process of adding more images to his vile collection.

She added: “He was asleep on the sofa with a laptop open on the floor – it was downloading files. The officer stopped the downloads and closed the computer down.

“A number of other devices were seized from the address and were found to contain indecent images of children.

“There were a number of videos of an hour in length.”

The court heard how Jeffries had 13 previous convictions for 36 offences but nothing of a similar nature.

Jeffries pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children - 10,308 category A images - the most serious, 303 category B images and 20,220 category C images.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing extreme pornographic images - namely five videos which portrayed a sex act on a dog.

Dr Christopher Wood, mitigating, said it was highly unusual for a man of 50 with no previous sexual offences to be found with this many child abuse images.

He added: “There has to accept that there is some awareness of his intentions because when the police arrived, he was downloading them at the time.”

Recorder Jamie Hill KC locked the pervert up for a total of 15 months for all four offences.

He said: “The most serious are those ones in Category A, they are some of the worst possible images that you can possess.

“People who indulge in this course of behaviour, you did it over a two-year period, are providing a market for those who would commit child abuse physically and seek to profit from it.

“There’s a huge number of photographs and videos of the very worst kind, including babies who are clearly in distress.”

Jeffries, of Skinner Street, Stockton, was made subject of a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and told he must sign on the sex offenders’ register for the same period of time.
