A huge sinkhole has suddenly appeared in the middle of a road leaving residents shocked.

The massive chamber opened up in the middle of Stepney Bank in the Ouseburn area of Newcastle on Tuesday (July 18) with the tarmac totally caved in.

Dirty sewage water could be seen flowing underneath the road surface with some homes losing their water supply.

A handful of cones guarded the gaping hole on Tuesday as residents took a cautious look and one called police.

A cop was spotted looking into the hole – but the force carried out no further enquiries.

Full barriers were erected on Wednesday as repair work got underway.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: "Our teams have been on site at Stepney Bank, Newcastle, today to carry out an emergency repair after customer reports of no water.

“We discovered a burst on a water main and the teams have been working hard and the repair has been completed with minimal disruption to customers.

“Investigations are ongoing into what caused the damage to the road and the water main and we will continue to work with partners to restore the road surface.”

The Northern Echo contacted Newcastle Council for a comment.
