A North East MP is leading calls to crack down on off-road bikers 'terrorising' residents.

There have been a growing number of complaints from across the country of young people performing dangerous stunts near roads on off-road bikes.

Many of the bikers wear balaclavas to prevent them being identified.

Matt Vickers, MP for Stockton South, will chair a debate at Westminster Hall tomorrow (Tuesday,  July 11) to attempt to get the issue heard in the Commons.

He has heard troubling reports from residents of incidents in Thornaby and Stockton town centre.

Mr Vickers said: "Off-road bikes have become an everyday annoyance to my constituents. They speed down the centre of busy main roads, faces covered, and with complete ignorance of the highway code.

"The individuals riding around on them act as though they’re untouchable.

"It is imperative that the government treats off-road bikes with the same tough stance that we are taking against other anti-social behaviour, such as the commitment to banning NOS and increasing the fines for graffiti.

"This behaviour is dangerous, unneighbourly and frankly, illegal. The measures the police are able to respond with should reflect this."

Mr Vickers has been meeting with police chiefs to raise the issue and he also had a meeting with Suella Braverman to highlight the problem.

It is suggested that the best way to deal with the behaviour is to report any sightings immediately.

People are advised to report where they suspect bikes are being stored to the police.

Once locations have been reported the police can then carry out searches on the properties.

There are growing calls for a national framework to be created to deal with the growing issue.
