Three people seriously hurt in a crash in a county Durham village yesterday (Wednesday, July 7) were all riding on the same motorcycle, police have revealed. 

There was a large emergency services response, including two air ambulances, who attended the crash in Greencroft, Annfield Plain yesterday - including two helicopters. 

Emergency services converged on West Road, Greencroft, Annfield Plain, shortly before noon, after reports of a collision at the road's junction with Loud Terrace.

Paramedics and an air ambulance doctor helped three people who were injured before they were taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle.   

A Durham Police spokesperson said today:  "Three people have been seriously injured following a collision in Stanley yesterday.

"Police were called at 11.45am on Wednesday (July 5) to reports of a three-vehicle collision on West Road, Annfield Plain, Stanley.

"It is believed a motorcycle carrying three passengers collided with a Renault Grand Scenic after overtaking a Hyundai Tucson.The Northern Echo:

"The three men were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital in Newcastle where they remain.

"The drivers of the vehicles did not sustain any injuries.

"A road closure was in place for around five hours whilst accident investigators worked at the scene."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said earlier: "We received a call at 11.40am this morning (Wednesday 5 July) to reports of a road traffic incident on Loud  Terrace, Annfield Plain.

"We dispatched three ambulance crews and a clinical team leader to the scene, and were supported by our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), Durham Constabulary, and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

"Three patients were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said earlier: "Our critical care teams based in Teesside and Cumbria were activated before 12pm to reports of a road traffic collision near Stanley.

"We had a doctor and paramedic team onboard both aircraft and after they arrived on scene they assessed and treated the patients.

"The patients were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service road crews, accompanied by our teams."
