Work is underway on a new housing development opposite a North East golf course which is set to bring 215 homes to the area.

Bellway have completed the purchase of land at Centurion Park in Wallsend after planning permission to build 215 homes on the site off Rheydt Avenue was approved by North Tyneside Council in April.

The house building firm has committed to making an investment towards primary education, sports facilities, parks and green spaces, and employment and training as part of the development scheme.

Land and Planning Manager at Bellway North East, Mark Gabriele, said they will begin work on building the new neighbourhood following the land purchase.

He said: "Now that the land purchase has been completed, we are starting work on building this new neighbourhood for Wallsend.

“Centurion Chase will bring high-quality homes to the area in a range of styles that will work for first-time buyers, growing families, and downsizers.

“And we will be making a significant difference to open spaces in the area through our commitment to funding games areas, sports facilities, parks, and public open space.

"It will mean the new residents and people from the wider community can enjoy being active and getting outside in their local neighbourhood.”

Bellway has agreed to pay £21,600 for allotments, £41,925 for ecology and biodiversity, £114,421 for parks and green space, £349,151 for sports facilities, £150,500 for play and multi-use games facilities, £65,000 for primary education, £32,465 for coastal mitigation, £49,000 for employment and training and £50,000 for roads.

The development will comprise 161 two to five-bedroom properties for private sale and 54 two and three-bedroom homes allocated as affordable housing for local people, available through low-cost rent or to purchase as shared ownership.

It will be located next to the Centurion Park Golf Course on a site previously home to the course’s club house, golf shop, and car park.

These facilities are proposed to be relocated on land to the north-east of the existing golf course.

The scheme will include areas of open space, planting of trees, hedges and bulbs, wildflower seeding and a mowed path through public open space. The existing bowling green will be retained.
