A prisoner, who escaped from inside a Category A North East prison, kicking off an overnight stand-off with officers, has come down from the roof.

Yesterday, a prisoner at Durham's high-security HMP Frankland climbed onto the roof of the prison dressed in only his underpants and trainers. This began a rooftop standoff with officers that would last for hours.

Emergency services were called to the outskirts of Durham after the inmate managed to scale a roof of the prison during the afternoon.

But the Ministry of Justice has today (Thursday, June 22) confirmed that the situation has been resolved, and the man has come down from the roof safely.

Officers in riot gear, and a negotiator, were dealing with the incident for several hours, with the prisoner eventually agreeing to come down at around 3.30 am this morning.

Last night, the prisoner was at one point seen brandishing what appeared to be a metal bar.

He was sitting and lying on his yellow and blue prison uniform as three uniformed officers and a negotiator spoke to him in a bid to get him to come down. It appeared as though he was sunbathing.

Officers were secured to the building with cables for their own safety.
