Organisers of a major agricultural show have announced it will not be held this year, with a series of smaller events taking place instead this summer ahead of its return in 2024.

North Yorkshire County Agricultural Show, held at Otterington Hall, near Northallerton, moved from its traditional June date to September in 2022, but its committee had planned to go back to June for this year.

However, in a statement to the D&S Times, a spokesperson for the organisers said that "on the only date that would be available to us, another big event is being held locally which would mean that our entries would be drastically reduced in a number of sections".

The next show will instead be held on Sunday, June 16, 2024. "We are already planning for a great show and an enjoyable day out for all the family," the show spokesperson said.

In the mean time, a number of events are being planned to generate further interest in the show, the first being a coffee morning and tombola, this Saturday, June 17 in Northallerton Town Hall, starting at 9am.

"We will have an interesting display of photographs and documents showing the history of the show from its start in the 1800s, to the present day," said the spokesperson. "We are a traditional agricultural show with classes that anyone can enter for farm livestock, crafts, horticulture, horses, classic cars, vintage tractors and machinery, with trade stands, stalls and lots more.

"Our display on Saturday will give an idea of the sections and types of classes you can enter with committee members and volunteers on hand to help you decide.

"There will also be details of future events such as a Yorkshire-themed afternoon tea, fashion show, clay pigeon shoot, tea dance and we have a Yorkshire quiz you can enter. We will also have information on how you can get involved, volunteer or become a friend of the show. We hope to see you on Saturday."
