Residents living on a “quiet” Darlington street have expressed their shock as a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident on the morning of June 8.

Emergency services were first called to Ridsdale Street and Louisa Street at around 10:15am on Thursday morning following reports of an assault that left a woman in her 30s in hospital with serious injuries.

A heavy police and forensic presence has since remained on the street following the incident whilst the alleyway behind Dickinson Street remains cordoned off as investigations continue.

One eyewitness living on Dickinson Street told The Northern Echo: “It has taken people by surprise, as it is so quiet here.

“Something like this, when you’re surrounded by police is quite a shock.”

Other residents claimed they only witnessed the incident as emergency services including the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene.

Another witness claimed that “some people heard shouting” as multiple emergency service vehicles took over the street.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary has said: We were called to reports of a disturbance at an address in Ridsdale Street, Darlington, shortly after 10am, this morning (Thursday).

“A woman in her 30s sustained serious injuries and was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment.

“A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

“An investigation is ongoing, but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Anyone with any information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 101 of June 8.”

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that two people were taken to hospital as they dispatched two ambulances to the scene.

A spokesperson for the service said: "We received a call shortly after 10am this morning (Thursday, June 8) to reports of an incident at a private address in Darlington.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one duty officer, one rapid response paramedic, one specialist paramedic, and requested additional support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
