A man has been charged with assault after three police officers were stabbed whilst carrying out a welfare check on Friday night (June 2).

Cleveland Police were alerted to concerns for an individual on Billingham's Corfe Crescent at around 10.15 pm last night. 

But whilst attending the incident, officers encountered a man wielding a weapon, who became aggressive, slashing one officer and stabbing two others. 

The 34-year-old man has now been charged

But whilst attending the incident, officers encountered a man wielding a weapon, who became aggressive, slashing one officer and stabbing two others. 

He’s been remanded to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Monday, June 5).

The incident prompted a huge emergency service response, with eyewitnesses reporting that there were over 20 police cars in attendance at Corfe Crescent until the early hours of the morning. 

Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene of the incident this morning. 

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "A 34-year-old man arrested following an incident on Corfe Crescent, Billingham on Friday night (2nd June) in which three officers were injured has been charged with three counts of Section 18 assault, and with threatening someone with a weapon."

At the time, a spokesperson said: "Police attended an address on Corfe Crescent, Billingham, at around 10.15 pm on Friday, June 2, following a concern for welfare report.

"While attending the incident, officers encountered a man with a knife who became aggressive towards officers.

"Two Cleveland Police officers received puncture wounds while a third officer received slash wounds. All three were taken to the hospital where they received stitches.

"A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and was taken to hospital for minor injuries. He is now in police custody."
