Police say they are not treating the death of a man whose body was found in the early hours of this morning as suspicious.

Shortly after 12am today, officers were alerted by the ambulance service to a report of concern for the welfare of a man in a field off Highbury, Jesmond.

Despite an emergency service response, the man, who is in his 50s, was declared dead at the scene.

Police have now confirmed that following enquiries they do not believe the man’s death to have been suspicious.

Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost our thoughts remain with the man’s family at what is an absolutely devastating time for them.

“I would ask that their privacy is respected as they attempt to come to terms with the events of the last 24 hours.

“A full investigation was launched as we looked to build a clearer picture as to the circumstances surrounding his death. As a result of those enquiries, we are satisfied that there was no third party involvement and we are not treating his death as suspicious.
