Police have seized a large dog after a girl was taken to hospital with serious injuries following an incident on Monday (May 29).

A Bully XL breed of dog was impounded after an incident in the Port Clarence area of Stockton in which a 15-year-old girl was bitten.

The teenager remains at the University Hospital of North Tees with serious injuries. Cleveland Police have said her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

They said enquiries are ongoing into the incident and no one has been arrested.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Officers have seized a dog following an incident on Monday evening where a teenager suffered injuries in Port Clarence.

"A 15-year-old girl remains at the University Hospital of North Tees with serious injuries following an incident at an address in the Port Clarence area on Monday May 29.

"Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and no one has been arrested."

This comes after officers warned members of the public not to approach what they described as a male XL Bully type dog “under any circumstances”.

The dog is aged between four and five years old.

In an earlier statement, they said: "We would urge people not to approach it, should they come across it.

"Anyone who comes across the dog should call police immediately on 999, and do not attempt to approach the dog under any circumstances.

“Anyone who has information on the dog's current whereabouts is also asked to call police immediately, quoting reference number 103512.”
