A man has been left hospitalised after a serious assault in the early hours of Sunday (May 28) morning.

The incident happened on Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland, County Durham at 2.30am on Sunday when the victim was left with injuries to his face.

Police described the attack as a ‘serious’ assault and the victim was left needing hospital treatment, being taken to University Hospital North Durham.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released on bail while pending further enquiries.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault on Newgate Street, in Bishop Auckland, shortly after 2.30am on Sunday, May 28.

“Witnesses are asked to call PC James, at Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 59 of May 28.”
