A Darlington football fan has been banned from attending football matches after pleading guilty to threatening behaviour.
James Cosgrove, 32, of Hercules Street, Darlington, has been banned from regulated football for three years after pleading guilty to threatening behaviour at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.
Cosgrove was arrested during a disturbance on Yarm Road, Darlington, ahead of Darlington FC’s match against Chester City, on April 1.

Police and club officials had warned fans before the game anti-social behaviour would not be tolerated.
Inspector Sara Baxter, of Durham Constabulary, said: “The fans from both teams had been warned ahead of the game not to be involved in causing trouble and were made aware of possible consequences if they ignored this advice.

“We will not tolerate behaviour of this kind, whether it be before, during or after a game.
“Hopefully this sends out a message that anyone who causes trouble, will also be risking a ban from matches for a significant period of time.”
The court ordered Cosgrove to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work over the next 12 months and pay £85 in costs.
