A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after coming off their bike on a County Durham road this afternoon.

A driver was taken to hospital after coming off their motorbike on the A689 at Coundon between Parkhead roundabout and Leasingthorne roundabout today (May 6).

The person was treated at the scene for suspected chest and pelvic injuries before being airlifted to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.

North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed they received a report of the incident at 2:40pm and deployed two paramedic crews and the air ambulance to the scene.

An NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 13.40h today (6 May) to attend an incident for a motorcyclist who had come off his bike.

"We dispatched two paramedic crews and the air ambulance, who attended the incident on the A689 near Coundon.

"One patient was treated for suspected chest and pelvic injuries before being airlifted to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance."

Durham Police confirmed earlier today the A689 at Coundon between Parkhead roundabout and Leasingthorne roundabout has been closed in both directions due to an ongoing incident.

They advised motorists to find an alternative route.
