A missing woman has been found after a helicopter was mobilised and residents were urged to check garages and outbuildings in the search.

North Yorkshire Police became "extremely concerned" for  a woman's welfare after she failed to return from a walk near her home in Staxton. 

The 69-year-old may not have been familiar with the area as she only recently moved - and police believed she may have found her way into a garage or outbuilding overnight.

The force thanked the public for their help in finding the missing woman: "Great news - missing woman found. 

"Last night we urgently appealed for sightings of a woman who had gone missing from Staxton, near Scarborough.

"We're delighted to report that she was found at 9.30 am this morning - cold and wet, but safe - and is being brought home.

"We'd particularly like to thank local residents who responded to our initial appeal for information overnight. Their calls proved absolutely crucial in focusing the search and helping to find her."

At the time, a spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police said: "We are continuing to search for a missing 69-year-old, from Staxton near Scarborough.

"Officers are asking residents in the area to urgently check their garages and outbuildings for signs, and review any CCTV or video doorbell systems that might have picked her up.

"The missing woman left her home on foot at about 8 pm on Wednesday 3 May.

"This new CCTV image shows what she was wearing when she was last seen. 

"Police are extremely concerned for her welfare, and the NPAS police helicopter and search and rescue teams have been involved in the search overnight."
