Two men were arrested as police found "two bricks" of white powder after stopping a driver on a County Durham road.

Two men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply after police found "two bricks of white powder believed to be cocaine" when stopping a driver on Newburn Road in Stanley just before 10pm on Tuesday (April 25).

Durham Police confirmed they had stopped the driver of a Ford Fiesta after "questionable driving" who subsequently failed a drug wipe.

Police searched the car after noticing the scent of cannabis and found the suspected cocaine in the passenger footwell.

Following this, the driver revealed more drugs were in his bedroom at home and a search of his house revealed more suspected cocaine, pills and other equipment suspected to have been used in drug dealing.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: " Just before 10pm last night officers from the Durham Roads & Armed Policing Unit stopped a Ford Fiesta after some questionable driving in Newburn Road, Stanley.

"Officers carried out a drugs wipe on the driver which he failed and was arrested.

"But on returning to the vehicle to tell the passenger, officers caught a strong smell of cannabis and a search of the car was conducted.

"Lo and behold, two bricks of white powder believed to be cocaine, were found in the passenger footwell which was seized and the driver and his passenger were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.

"As officers explained what would happen, the driver also revealed there were more drugs in his bedroom at home and a search of his house further revealed more suspected cocaine, pills and other equipment suspected to have been used in drug dealing."

Both men were taken into custody where they remain.
