A man armed with a knife and believed to be intoxicated has been arrested after an incident at a County Durham address saw a village main road cordoned off. 

The man in his late 30s was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage following an incident at an address in Willington on Monday (April 17).

Police said they were called to a house on the village's Commercial Street at around 8.40pm after they received reports of a disturbance.

Officers attending the address found a man armed with a knife who appeared to be 'intoxicated' on the garage roof of a property.

Police cordoned off the main road through the village while officers engaged with the man.

They confirmed the man received minor injuries during the incident - before he was brought to safety and detained after 9:50pm.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "A man in his late 30s was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage following an incident at an address in Willington.

"Police were called to a house in Commercial Street at around 8.40pm last night (April 17), following reports of a disturbance.

"Officers attended the address and found a man, who was armed with a knife and appeared to be intoxicated, on the garage roof at the property.

"The road was closed while officers engaged with the man, who received minor injuries during the incident.
