A woman has been charged with murder in connection with an incident on a North East residential street on Good Friday.

Cleveland Police have confirmed Marie Metcalfe, 40, has been charged with the murder of Laura Metcalfe, 44, following an incident on Brougham Terrace in Hartlepool on Good Friday (April 7).

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 8pm, where they took the victim to James Cook University Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police confirmed a woman, 44, also appeared at court charged with assisting an offender and a man, 41, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, interviewed and released on bail while enquiries continue.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Marie Metcalfe remains in custody after appearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Monday 10th April.

"A 44-year-old woman also appeared at court charged with assisting an offender and a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, interviewed and released on bail while enquiries continue.

"Laura’s family are being supported by specially trained officers; our thoughts remain with them at this very difficult time."

Marie Metcalfe, 40, had appeared before Teesside Magistrates Court last Monday (April 10) charged with attempted murder following the incident.

Laura Metcalfe had previously been in a critical but stable condition, but died on Saturday (April 15).

Last week, Superintendent Martin Hopps, District Commander for Hartlepool, said: “Cleveland Police would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and there are no wider tensions within the community. 

"Police will remain in the area conducting reassurance patrols and anyone with information is encouraged to speak with officers or contact the Major Enquiry Team by calling 101.”
