Police have confirmed that two 12-year-old boys have been arrested on suspcion of burglary after an incident at a County Durham school over the weekend. 

Officers from Durham Police attended Seaham High School on Sunday (March 19) evening, where they found the two boys and a significant amount of damage to the school building and property. 

They have now confirmed that two boys, aged 12, have been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Police received a report of an alarm activation at Seaham High School, Station Road, yesterday evening (Sunday, March 19).

"Officers attended the premises and found that entry had been forced and significant damage had been caused to the building and property within.

"Two boys aged 12 have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and remain in custody."

It's thought that parts of Seaham High School are highly damaged. 

Following the vandalism and burglary incident, the High School put out a statement late on Sunday (March 19) to inform parents that the school would be closed 'until further notice' after the serious incident.

In a statement obtained by The Northern Echo, headteacher of the school, Geoff Lumsdon, said: "I regret to inform you that our school has experienced a burglary and there has been some damage to the property. As a precautionary measure, we will need to conduct a full site inspection in daylight before reopening the school.

"Therefore, we kindly request that you do not send your child to school until you receive further notice from us."

However, issuing an update to its earlier statement, Seaham High School said on Monday (March 20) that the school will be open today for years 10 and 11 only, due to the importance of exam preparation.

The statement also mentioned that all students would return to the school as normal on Tuesday (March 21).

In an updated statement, the school said online: "Update – the school will be open to Years 10 and 11 ONLY.

"Please report to school for 11.10.

"Your tutor will meet you at the usual place - there will be a 20 minute registration then into P3 lessons.

"Lunch will be served for both year groups at 12.30.

"All students will return to school as normal tomorrow.

"Apologies for the inconvenience but we are prioritising examination classes. Thank you for your understanding."
