New figures have revealed the region’s most expensive petrol stations, with prices topping £2 per litre in some areas.

Data collected by petrol price comparison app Petrol Prices has revealed the brands charging over the odds for a litre of fuel in locations across the North East.

The average cost of a litre of unleaded currently stands at 147.5p, according to motoring organisation RAC, but some forecourts have been charging as much as 171.0p this month.

Filling up with diesel costs on average 166.4p, more than 40p less than some fuel retailers in the North East have been spotted charging.

The price of refuelling soared to new heights in 2022 with unleaded setting you back 191.4p on average and diesel coming in at 199.1p in July.

But there are fears motorists could face a pump price shock unless Chancellor Jeremy Hunt keeps a 5p duty cut put in place last year in his budget on Wednesday (March 15).

RAC fuel boffin Simon Williams said: “All eyes are now on what the Chancellor decides to do with fuel duty at the Budget. While we accept the 5p cut introduced last year can’t last forever, with household finances under even more pressure this Spring than they were a year ago, we don’t think now is the time to be removing it.

“To decide to raise prices by 5p on both fuels would punish households and businesses struggling to make ends meet, and may have a detrimental effect on both inflation and the wider economy.”
