Popular pub chain Brewdog has made an update about its venue in Durham, as people in the region are left wondering about an opening date for the pub site.

In August last year, it was first announced that the craft beer chain would be moving into the Milburngate development in Durham City - leaving customers excited at the prospect of having a new venue to try.

Boasting stunning views of the historic city from its glass-fronted design and balcony, the pub was just one of numerous new Brewdog locations popping up across the UK over the last few years.

Once built, the 3,736 sq ft unit will include a large outdoor seating area with uninterrupted views of Durham Cathedral and Castle and along the city’s picturesque riverside.

Currently with 67 UK locations, in addition to bars in more than 20 countries including United States, Spain, Germany, Italy, Australia and Sweden, Milburngate was seen as part of BrewDog’s continued expansion with a further dozen in the pipeline.

Despite the prospect of having the venue complete in early 2023, an updated statement from Brewdog to The Northern Echo seems to suggest that a decision on the opening date will be delayed, as the company look for 'clarity' from the council and administrators.

It's understood that the problem hinges on the involvement of Gateshead-based construction company Tolent, which went into administration earlier this year - leaving several high-profile projects in the balance.

According to a Brewdog spokesperson, an opening date for the Durham city venue can't be made until clarity from the council and the managers of the Milburngate development can be sought.

Developed by a joint venture between Arlington Real Estate and Richardson, Milburngate will feature 153 built-to-rent apartments and contemporary, flexible Grade A office space.

Meanwhile, the progress of Everyman cinema, which also agreed to join the Milburngate project, is unknown.

On social media, many are questioning when the new Brewdog Durham venue will be open - but until now, nothing has been issued.

Speaking to The Northern Echo on Thursday (March 9), a spokesperson for Brewdog said: “We are looking forward to confirming a date for our bar opening when we have clarity from the council and administrators on the Milburngate development being completed.”

Amy Harhoff, Durham County Council’s corporate director of regeneration, economy and growth, added: “We look forward to welcoming Brewdog and other incredible businesses to Milburngate, and are currently working with the developer partner for the site to complete the development and finalise dates for opening.”
