A man arrested as part of an inquiry following the death of a woman at a house in County Durham has been released while enquiries continue.

Detectives have not revealed the nature of the investigation following the death of the 48-year-old in Spennymoor on Monday.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and an air ambulance were, called to property on Craddock Street, at teatime and a 50-year-old man was taken into police custody.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Northern Echo:

A Durham Constabulary spokesman said: “The death is currently being treated as unexpected and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The force has not disclosed why the man was arrested, or what he was suspected of, but has said it was in connection with the incident.

He was taken into police custody for questioning and released under investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Barker, who is leading the investigation, said it is believed to have been an isolated incident and officers are not looking for any other suspects.
