A bakery in Newcastle Upon Tyne has been named one of the best artisan bakeries in Britain.

Northern Rye was ranked number six in the Bakers Dozen 2023 by industry experts British Baker.

Located at a riverside plot in Newcastle’s creative quarter known as the Ouseburn, Northern Rye is best known for its bread, pastries, and coffee.

The bakery was founded by Robbie Livingstone who became a full-time baker in 2018.

Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, he officially opened Northern Rye’s first shop to the public in 2020, just down from the production bakery.

The baked goods are made using slow fermentation techniques and organic flour, most of which is stone ground, sourced from British millers including Gilchesters based in Northumberland and Shipton Mill in Gloucestershire.

More than 100 specialists, including artisan bakers, consultants, suppliers and lecturers, were asked to vote for their favourite artisan bakeries.

Each voter was hand-selected by British Baker with the voters broken down by region to ensure bakeries across Britain had an equal opportunity to shine.

What is an artisan bakery?

An artisan bakery is where skilled bakers make baked goods such as bread, buns, pastries, and cakes by hand, often utilising longer and more traditional processes.

Quality of ingredients and the end products are high on the agenda, and as a result, artisan bakeries typically only have a handful of sites.
