With its rolling countryside, fantastic coastal towns and charming villages dotted with independent businesses – County Durham has a lot to offer.

Although it can be hard, we asked our readers to tell us what their favourite thing about the county was.

With over 70 comments we weren’t short of things to pick from with people listing a range of things that give them pride to be in County Durham.

The location:

Many people were keen to share their love of County Durham’s prime location of being close to other great areas of the North East.

One person said: “I love how I can get in the car and easily travel to Durham City, Newcastle, the seaside and Teasdale.

“It’s also a short trip to the train station so I can easily go further afield and it is also easy to get to the Lake District just for the day, we have lots of options regarding places to visit.

The history:

County Durham’s history was mentioned a number of times by residents, with many people praising the county’s mining history and historic buildings such as Durham Cathedral.

One person said: “All the mining history plus my lady friend is from Durham.”

Another person added: “Space. Scenery. Historic places. Sense of community. And brass bands.”

It’s people and community

Of course you cant mention County Durham without mentioning the countryside of Teesdale and Weardale which is many peoples’ favourite thing about the county.
