A family have been left devastated after a fire ripped through their home - leaving large parts of the property in an unliveable state and the family rebuilding their lives.

Early on Saturday (February 18) evening, crews from Richmond and Colburn were sent to a house fire in Barton.

On arrival, it was confirmed that everyone was out of the house and smoke was spreading to adjoining properties.

Two firefighters in breathing apparatus were tasked with entering the property to deal with the fire.

They were met with a severe fire in the bedroom which had spread to the loft.

In total, 12 firefighters were used to tackle the fire and to check other properties for fire spread.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Richmond, Colburn and Bedale along with two crews from Darlington attended reports of a property fire, alarms were fitted and activated and on arrival, all persons were out of the property, two people were treated for smoke inhalation. 

"The fire caused 100% fire damage to the bedroom, heavy smoke and heat damage to three further rooms and smoke logging in the roof voids of four adjacent properties. 

"Crews used 12 breathing apparatus, three hose reels, two covering jets, two triple extension ladders, positive pressure ventilation fan, three thermal imagining cameras and small tools to extinguish the fire. 

"The cause is believed to be accidental."
