The A1(M) road is closed northbound in two locations due to overturned HGVs.

An overturned vehicle has caused the stretch of the A1(M) between J51 at Leeming Bar and J52 at Catterick to be closed.

The closure happened shortly after 7am this morning (17 January).

A diversion route is in place, and road users are advised to follow the hollow circle sign.

Highways England have put the following diversion route in place:

  • Exit the A1(M) at the J51 northbound exit slip road.
  • Proceed along the A6055 for approximately 6 miles, to the next roundabout.
  • Take the second exit onto the A6055 (signed 'A1(M), Brompton-on-Swale, A6055, Colburn, Catterick Garrison, Richmond, A6136) and proceed to the next roundabout.
  • At the roundabout take the third exit onto the A1(M) (signed 'The NORTH A1(M)'). and re-join the A1(M) northbound at J5

A second closure was put in place around an hour later on the same northbound carriageway between J48 (Minskip) and J49 (Dishforth) after another HGV overturned.

Later in the morning a third road closure was put in place, this time on the southbound carriageway between junctions J60 (Bradbury) and J59 (Newton Aycliffe) following reports of another two vehicles overturning in the wind.
