A VIDEO game developer is to move into a new North East office block building, a councillor has revealed.

Midlsbrough Council's executive member for regeneration, Cllr Eric Polano, told members that gaming firm Double Eleven will move into the town's new Boho X building - just moments after saying he couldn’t identify the new tenant.

In December, it was revealed that the handover would be in the spring and then the firm would have to complete its own fit-out.

Cllr Polano said: “A lease is due to be signed this week by a local company to take all of Boho X but we aren’t allowed to advertise that because they’re doing the advertising at this stage.

"This will leave space in Boho 1, Double Eleven will move some people out of there into Boho 10 (Boho X) but we need more space than that.”

The plans for Boho X underwent huge changes as they were scaled back from a 260ft tower to a low-rise building.

More than £600,000 was spent on the design costs for the original tower which was scrapped.

An audit review earlier this year found Midlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston had exceeded his remit, meeting with Chinese state-owned developer BCEGI on matters of project direction without being accompanied by council staff or documenting the meetings, contravening the council’s constitution.

At the same meeting, the council’s executive gave permission for designs for another office block scheme, dubbed Boho 11, to be commissioned. An area just off Feversham Street has been earmarked for the scheme.

The proposed new Middlehaven project, which has come about after the council identified strong demand, could see another 35,000sqft of office space in the area known for its vibrant digital scene.

In the council’s report, it states the development would not be higher than four storeys due to its proximity to a residential area.

This initial work is expected to cost £30,000 and will be funded from any leftover cash from the Boho X budget. After this has been completed, another report will be presented to the council’s executive detailing the financial viability of the scheme and a decision will be made about whether to move forward.
