Officers investigating the torching of several cars overnight have confirmed the incident is being treated as arson.

Police were called at 12.20am today to reports of several cars on fire in Milburn Street and Wilson Street in Crook.

Ten cars and the windows of several houses suffered fire damage as a result of the incident.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “An investigation has been launched and residents will see an increased police presence in the area while officers conduct their enquiries.

“Local neighbourhood teams are also patrolling the area to provide further reassurance to local residents.

“Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time.”

Crews from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.

Group manager Michael Pearson said three crews spent an hour and three quarters at the scene.

He said: "It took up quite a bit of our resources. We are treating it seriously and will be working with the police on their investigation."
