PUPILS at a North-East primary school are taking a leading role in tackling sustainability and caring for their local environment.
Skerne Park Academy, in Darlington, has launched its first Eco Council, comprising pupils from each year group.
The 11 members of the group had to display their green credentials with a presentation on action plans which are now at the heart of the school’s sustainability agenda.
The Eco Council, managed by Assistant Headteacher Jamie Dillon, meets weekly and responsibilities include: litter-picks in around the school and the local community; organising signage on recycling bins; and ensuring lights and computers are switched off at break times.
A special assembly has focused on recycling and waste, and a weekly energy review is carried out to see which class is the winner by being the most efficient.
Headteacher Clair Gooding said: “We want to show that the school is taking sustainability and the environment seriously, and the children have really embraced the idea of the Eco Council.
“As it progresses, the aim is to link up with the local community and help encourage others to show that they care about our environment. Young people are our future so it’s about inspiring them to be environmental champions.”
The Eco Council members are: Scarlett Plane, Kacper Skwarek, Casey Lowery, Matas Skersinskis, Dauntaye Creighton, Jessica Hutchinson, Ellic Smith, Cai Courtney, Jake Watson, Laura Toth, Lilly-Louise Houston.
