Chris Ion, Aviation Development Manager at Newcastle International Airport said: “We are delighted to see Aer Lingus Regional grow their presence at Newcastle International Airport.

“The addition of this daily service to Belfast City Airport more than doubles the airline’s capacity from Newcastle, after recently announcing that their service to Dublin will increase from five-weekly to daily from 27 March.

“This investment provides convenient and flexible access to the heart of Belfast, benefiting business and leisure travellers alike, as well as increasing opportunities for the attraction of inbound tourists to the North East of England.”

The announcement comes just days after regional airline Flybe went into administration, cancelling all flights including those between Newcastle and Belfast City.

All Flybe flights were grounded at the weekend after the airline, which only relaunched from Newcaslte in November 2022.

Tickets for the new Belfast route are on sale now, starting at just £38.99 one way.

Commenting on the announcement, Ciarán Smith, Head of Commercial at Emerald Airlines, which operates the flights on behalf of Aer Lingus said: “We are very pleased to be strengthening our schedule out of Belfast City Airport.

“As the demand for travel options from Belfast only increases, this new route will no doubt be warmly welcomed.”

The new flights are the latest additions to the departure board at Newcastle Airport. LoganAir announced new flights to Oslo last month, starting this summer.

Greek airline AEGEAN will also begin flying to Athens and Turkish carrier SunExpress will fly to Antalya throughout the summer holiday season.
