Recently, I interviewed a local Animal Shelter which goes by the name of Brysons, and is located in Eighton Banks. I spoke to Tracy Holmes, the manager, and asked several questions about the founding and current status of the shelter and the animals being held there.

HOW WAS THE SHELTER CREATED?

The company's name originated from their initial founder, Bill Bryson, who created the shelter back in 1947.  He created the shelter due to his passion for horses, and wanted to take care of neglected and uncared for horses in the area. Over time, people began bringing other animals into the shelter, for example cats and dogs.

HOW MANY CATS ARE LOOKING TO BE RESCUED?

I asked, “How many cats do you currently have here?” in which

Tracey responded, “Currently we have about 40 cats here at the moment.” This being such a large number just shows how many cats are currently looking to be rehomed.

WHICH CAT HAS BEEN WITH THE SHELTER THE LONGEST?

Secondly i asked, “What is the longest amount of time a current cat has been with you?” To this tracey responded, “We havent got any long-term cats, the longest period of time we’ve held a current cat here is probably about 2 months.” This shows that eventhough cats are very popular pets, some still do get overlooked.

WHEN IS THE SHELTERS BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR?

Spring-summer is usually the shelter's busiest time of year. This is because animals which were given as Christmas presents are now becoming much harder work, and are no longer as cute and playful as they once were. Most people assume that January would be a shelter's busiest time of year however, this is untrue.

WHICH ANIMAL IS USUALLY MOST POPULAR?

Even though it is stereotypical for people to prefer dogs over cats, this type of bias is unheard of in Brysons. For example, in 2022 alone, 220 cats were rehomed, as opposed to only 125 dogs. This is because cats are a lot less hard work and stress in comparison to dogs. They mainly take care of themselves, and don't require constant attention.

WHY SHOULD YOU RESCUE A CAT?

Cats are a perfect choice for those who tend to live a busy lifestyle, and don’t have the sort of time to take care of a dog, however, still want a loving pet to come home to. Also, rescuing a cat has so many more benefits than purchasing one from a breeder. This is because, not only are you helping staff and volunteers to keep the shelter open, you’re also allowing a once neglected pet to live the happy life they deserve.

HOW CAN PEOPLE HELP TO SUPPORT SHELTERS?

I asked, “How can we as a community support animal shelters?” Tracey responded, “By considering giving an animal a second chance.” Another way in which you can support Brysons is by volunteering to help the animals and staff. For example, walking dogs or even just spending time with the animals. Tracey also said that donations are always welcome, whether that’s; food, toys or even money to support funding. Brysons would be extremely grateful for any donations, as animal shelters are not government funded, and vet bills alone cost up to £5000 per month.

Overall, you should consider Brysons when adopting an animal because you’re not only supporting a company, but gaining a new friend for life.
