Abandoned vehicles blighting a town centre street have been cleared in the latest phase of an ongoing crackdown.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston today hailed the operation a success and urged motorists to be more considerate, or risk seeing their car sent to the crusher.

Middlesbrough Council’s Neighbourhood Safety Wardens were called following complaints about cars blocking the pavement on Howard Street.

Other cars on the street were found to be untaxed, damaged and abandoned, and causing damage to the highway.

On Thursday, January 5 the team seized and removed four cars which will now be crushed, while a further nine were issued with Penalty Charge Notices.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: “Fantastic work by the wardens that sends out a clear message.

“Lazy, inconsiderate law-breakers think they can get away with it because it’s not a residential area, but these cars are a hazard for pedestrians and a headache for local businesses.

“At best you’ll be hit in the pocket – at worst you won’t see your car again.”

To report unlicensed vehicles and other environmental issues, call the Middlesbrough Council Contact Centre on 01642 726001.

Parking facilities are available in town centre pay & display car parks, including Captain Cook Square, Cannon Park, France Street and Zetland car parks.
