A multi-storey car park in a County Durham town could be demolished to make way for further developments according to plans.

The multi-storey car park in Newton Aycliffe, found on Central Avenue was closed recently due to health and safety concerns.

However, the site could now be demolished creating a “sizeable development plot alongside the existing surface car parking” next to it.

The plans argue that the sites of Beveridge Way and the multi-storey car park are currently being “underutilised.”

It adds: “The multi-storey car park is closed and has reached the end of its life, it is therefore recommended that working alongside the owners Freshwater, the masterplan supports the demolition of the car park.”

The plans fall within a master plan for Newton Aycliffe that could be successful if the Level Up funding bid is successful.

As part of the master plan, there are a number of proposed developments aimed at drastically improving Newton Aycliffe’s town centre.

The plans state that there are “a number of significant challenges that the town centre faces, but also opportunities.

It adds: “Diversifying the town centre offer will create a better experience for its users. Therefore, a key aim of improving the town centre should be a more diversified offer to attract prolonged stays and repeat visits.”

A spokesperson for Newton Aycliffe Town Council said: “Any proposed demolition of the multi-storey car park is part of the Aycliffe Masterplan document and we await the results of the Levelling Up funding bids with interest.
