A man has been taken to hospital after falling from stairs onto rocks at a North East coastal promenade 

Emergency services have confirmed a man in his 30s was taken Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital after a fall near the lower Promenade area of Whitley Bay on Tuesday (December 27).

A North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) spokesperson confirmed they received reports of a man falling down stairs onto rocks in the area at 10:30pm.

They also confirmed he had suffered a shoulder injury, while the incident was attended by Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB).

In a statement today, a NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.30pm last night (Tuesday)  to a person who had fallen down stairs onto rocks in Whitley Bay.

"We dispatched four vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team, a duty officer, a rapid response paramedic and a double crewed ambulance.

"A male patient was transported to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital with a shoulder injury."

Meanwhile, TVLB said they located the man sitting in a rock pool who was conscious but unresponsive.

They said their members and paramedics from the NEAS’ Hazardous Area Response Team made their way along rocks to reach the casualty and provide first aid.

A TVLB spokesperson said: "HM Coastguard paged the Brigade to support a multi-agency response after concerns were raised for a casualty who had been seen staggering towards a lower promenade in the Whitley Bay area, and then going out of sight.

"Brigade members arrived on scene and quickly located the casualty sat in a rock pool, below a drop of around 20 foot.

"Although appearing to be conscious, the casualty was unable to communicate with rescuers.

"The casualty was then placed into a stretcher and extracted from the beach for onward transportation to hospital."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Northumbria Police told the Northern Echo the man had not suffered any serious injuries.

They said: “Shortly before 10pm on Tuesday (December 27) officers received a report of concern for the welfare of a man near to the lower promenade in Whitley Bay.

“Emergency services attended the scene where the man in his 30’s had already been brought to safety by partner agencies.

“Thankfully he was not seriously injured but was checked over as a precaution.”

TWFRS confirmed they had attended the scene and provided assistance to their partner agencies.

So far, the TVBL has attended 144 callouts in 2022.
