A number of animal disease control zones have been put in place across the North East and Yorkshire, to stem the ongoing bird flu outbreak.

Currently, there are a number of protection zones across the North, with six confirmed cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses on North East and North Yorkshire premises over the last three months.

This comes only days after the National Trust warned that this year's "litany" of weather extremes, which may have stoked the issue of avian influenza, is set to become the new norm as "climate change bites".

The whole of Great Britain has been under an avian influenza prevention zone (APIZ) since October, which means bird owners must follow strict biosecurity rules to prevent bird flu and stop the spread.

Since late September 2022, cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been confirmed in Barnard Castle, Leyburn, Northallerton, Thirsk, Easingwold, and Pickering, in populations of both commercial poultry and other captive birds.

When a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (the most serious type of bird flu) has been confirmed, a 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone are put in place around the infected premises.

We have pulled together a list of active control zones in the North East and North Yorkshire:
