A person has been hit by a train on the East Coast Main Line on Thursday (December 8), it has been confirmed. 

Rail services between York and Newcastle were severely delayed and some cancelled after it was reported that a person had been hit by a train between York and Northallerton.

Replacement bus services have been added, due to emergency services dealing with the tragic situation, while the train schedule for the rest of the day has been impacted.

The British Transport Police have confirmed the death. 

A spokesperson for the emergency service said: "Officers were called to Northallerton station at 12.57pm today (December 8) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

LNER has said online: "It is with the greatest sadness we report that a person has been hit by a train. Services will be delayed between York and Northallerton."

So far, two trains have been terminated or started at Newcastle, with LNER telling customers that the 07:55 Inverness to KingsCross due 15:50 was terminated at Newcastle, while the 14:00 Edinburgh to London Kings Cross due 18:41 was started from Newcastle.
