Police were called to the Victoria Jubilee Park at about 8am on Saturday, October 22, following a report of a woman having been attacked by a man.

Mason, of no fixed abode, but formerly of Second Street, Blackhall Colliery, was arrested that afternoon.

He will now no longer stand trial and has been remanded into custody ahead of the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Mason will be sentenced at 2pm on Friday, January 20.

Judge James Adkin said: “There will need to be a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service for these offences. There also needs to be an examination of dangerousness.

“You have pleaded guilty to the charges you face. Because you have pleaded guilty you get a reduced sentence. That’s how the law works.

“You are a young man who hasn’t been in trouble before but you have committed serious offences

“You know it is going to be a prison sentence.

“It is just a question of what sort of prison sentence and how long.”
