A man has admitted waylaying, assaulting and raping woman in a public park last month.

But Jamie Thomas Mason is facing a trial over three other alleged rapes on the same woman as part of the same incident in Spennymoor, on Saturday October 22.

Police were called to the Victoria Jubilee Park at about 8am that day following a report of a woman having been attacked by a man.

The 21-year-old defendant was arrested that afternoon and, following interview, was charged with four counts of rape and one each of kidnap, making a threat to kill and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Appearing via video link at a Durham Crown Court plea hearing today (Monday November 21), Mason, of no fixed abode, but formerly of Second Street, Blackhall Colliery, admitted one of the rape counts, plus kidnap, making a threat to kill and assault causing actual bodily harm.

A timetable was set for service of evidence in the case, including submission of a full defence statement by the defendant, by January 10, with a date for a trial on the three counts denied by Mason, to start at the court on Monday March 13.

In the meantime, he was remanded to remain in custody at nearby Durham Prison.
