A motorist was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving as a pedestrian was left in a critical condition after a crash in Darlington.

Police closed Victoria Road, Darlington for several hours on Tuesday night in response to the incident.

There were queues near Sainsbury’s and in the town as drivers were forced to find new routes during rush hour.

A woman was transported to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough just after the incident at 5pm.

The woman in her 60s arrested has since been released under investigation.

A statement from Durham police read: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian outside Sainsbury’s, in Victoria Road, Darlington, just before 5pm last night (November 15).

"The pedestrian, a woman in her 60s, was seriously injured and taken to James Cook University Hospital. She remains in a critical condition.

“A woman in her 60s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

“The road was closed whilst officers from the force’s Collision Investigation Unit worked and was reopened just after 11.30pm.
