Train services across the North East have been severely delayed and passengers have faced cancellations after a train hit a sheep on the line on Friday (November 11) morning.

For those travelling on the trains this morning, the East Coast Main Line was completely blocked between Newcastle and Edinburgh after a train was said to have collided with an 'object'.

Rail companies, including LNER, told its passengers that some trains would be terminating at Newcastle and wouldn't be going any further, while other passengers were stuck on their trains up and down the East Coast Main Line, all the way to London.

Despite LNER initially stating that an 'obstruction' had been hit by a train, they have since confirmed it was a sheep.

The first statement put out by LNER read: "Due to a train hitting an obstruction on the line between Berwick and Newcastle, all lines are blocked between these stations. Services running through these stations may be delayed."

However, they have now confirmed that the rail line is now back open, but have warned about severe delays for passengers travelling on the route.

A follow up statement from the rail operator stated: "Following a train hitting a sheep on the line between Berwick and Newcastle, all lines have now reopened. Services remain subject to delay in this area."
