A TENNIS team from a boys' school is celebrating, after winning a national tournament.

The B team of the independent Aysgarth School at Newton-le-Willows, near Bedale, North Yorkshire, won the national under 13s prep schools tennis tournament.

The team defeated the Terra Nova School, from Cheshire, in the final of the tournament, which was held at Repton School, in Derbyshire.

The Aysgarth pairs were Pierre Van Houtte and Gaston Chillet, who were the winners, and Oliver Cotton and Rodolphe Bichot.

Philip Southall, assistant headteacher, said: "This is the first time Aysgarth had entered the competition, and we are all delighted with the result."

For the first time ever, the school is to offer rugby and cricket coaching during the summer holidays.

The sessions, open to boys and girls aged between eight and 13, will be provided by qualified coaches, and offer youngsters a chance to improve their skills, or develop an understanding of both sports.

One and two-day courses will be held between August 4 and 14.

The rugby tuition will be offered by Gordon MacLelland, Aysgarth School's director of sport.

Mr MacLelland is also former head coach of Penrith rugby club Cricket coaching will be provided by Ben Wicling, also a teacher at the school.

Mr Wicling is an ECB qualified coach, and works with the under 14s team at Durham County Cricket Club.
