A NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD man has been killed in the after he was struck by a car as he waited for friends to give him a lift home.

The man, from Spennymoor in County Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident on the A688 road outside Parkhead Farm, Bishop Auckland, in the early hours of this morning.

He was walking along the footpath on the south-east side of the road at about 12.20am and friends travelling in a car had stopped to pick him up.

A police spokesman said: "At this time, it appears that the pedestrian has stepped into the carriageway to cross the road where he has been struck by a Fiat Panda car which was travelling in a north-eastern direction on the north-eastern carriageway."

The driver of the Panda was uninjured, but the car subsequently collided with a lamppost with extensive damage caused.

The road was closed for some time following the incident and Durham Constabulary's accident unit are appealing for witnesses.
