Very heavy rain is expected this evening to the extent where homes and businesses could be flooded and disruption could be caused to public transport, according to The Met Office.
Meteorologists have issued a yellow weather warning for the North East this evening (Monday, October 31) with a potential of up to 50mm of rain in four hours across the region.
This could lead to roads seeing a large a large volume of surface water and there is a risk power supplies could also face issues due to the downpours.
“An area of rain will move northwards overnight, turning heavy for a time before clearing away northeast on Tuesday morning,” the Met Office said in its warning.
“While many places are unlikely to see impacts, it is possible that the rain band could become slow moving for a time giving localised accumulations of 20-30mm in two to three hours and perhaps 40-50 mm in three to four hours which could lead to some surface water impacts and delays to transport.”
Areas affected in the North East include Darlington and County Durham, and people travelling in these places should check with their transport provider for updates.
The warning is currently in place and will remain in effect until 8am on Tuesday (November 1).
