However, the airport didn’t do as well on delays coming in as the tenth worst for delay length, with bigger airports including London Stansted and Glasgow both recording shorter average delays.

Passengers endure endured an average delay length of 29 minutes as the summer season got underway.

The Newcastle airfield was recently named UK and Irish Airport of the Year by the Travel Trade Gazette at the Travel Industry Awards 2022, with the airport’s quick security times given high praise.

A panel of industry experts said: “Newcastle International Airport impressed with its strong new routes across a range of airlines and its impressive six-minute security average.

“The Airport also has a clear carbon measurement and reduction strategy, stating it is on track to be a Net Zero Carbon Airport by 2035, which it claims is significantly earlier than many other European Airport targets.”

Meanwhile Teesside came out on top as one of the country’s most punctual airports, with average delays of just 11 minutes and 49% of flights taking off ahead of their scheduled departure time, although this may be partially due to the small number of flights from the airport compared to Newcastle.

The Northern Echo contacted Newcastle Airport to comment on these latest figures, but the airport did not respond to our request in time for publication.
