BRIDGES spanning a county are featured in an exhibition of new work by a town's art enthusiasts.

One of the subjects given to Chester-le-Street Art Society members this year was the bridges of County Durham.

It led to members going to various locations to paint and sketch various river crossings, railway viaducts and foot bridges.

The results can be viewed among the works on show in the society's spring exhibition, at Chester-le-Street Library.

They include Elvet and Prebend bridges, both distinctive crossings of the River Wear, in Durham, but there are some less wellknown structures in unfamiliar outposts of the county.

More than 40 new pieces, mostly watercolours, but also some oils and a few drawings, are featured in the display in the library's exhibition room, in Station Road.

Sixteen of the society's members have contributed to the display.

New members are welcome to its meetings, at Chester-le- Street Community Centre, in Newcastle Bank, on Wednesdays, from 7pm to 9pm. There is a £10 annual subscription and a 50p per meeting charge.

A selection of the best of members' works can be viewed until Saturday, June 7.
