Police have released a man under investigation after arresting him in connection with a ‘bomb threat’ in Sunderland city centre yesterday.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that a 67-year-old man who was arrested on Wednesday, October 5 has been released pending further enquiries.

This comes after police and the ambulance service were called to Plater Way yesterday, following a bomb threat at Sunderland City Hall.

Northumbria Police have now said they believe this was an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public.

In a statement today, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Our investigation continues following reports of malicious communications received on Wednesday directed towards City Hall on Plater Way, Sunderland.

“A 67-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the report has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

“While enquiries are at an early stage, we do believe the incident to be isolated and that there is no wider risk to the public.”

Many people in the area were left confused as they watched on from the street and neighbouring buildings.

Sunderland City Hall was evacuated following the threat and the surrounded roads were closed as a precautionary measure.

Police confirmed yesterday that a man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A police cordon remained in place for much of the day, while specialist search teams and dog units investigated the incident

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “An investigation was launched following reports of malicious communications directed towards City Hall on Plater Way, Sunderland.

“A number of precautionary measures have been put in place while emergency services remain in the area and we’d like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation at this time.”
